Chakra Meditation

The word Chakra is a Sanskrit word which translates to mean a circle or vortex. There are seven chakras in the body. These chakras are energy centers which control the distribution and flow of energy. If there is a partial or full blockage within one of these energy centers it has a negative effect on our physical, mental and emotional wellbeing. These blockages can be restored to normal flow by following a simple chakra meditation process.

The seven chakras in the body correspond to seven colors and are located as follows.

1. Root Chakra:- This is located at the base of the spine and is the color Red 2. Sacral Chakra: - This is located in the lower abdomen and is the color orange. 3. Naval Chakra: - This is located two inches below the navel and is the color yellow. 4. Heart Chakra: - This located in the heart and is the color green. 5. Throat Chakra: - This is located in the throat and is the color pale blue. 6. Brow Chakra: - This is located between the eyebrows, also known as the third eye and is the color indigo blue. 7. Crown Chakra: - This is located at the top of the head and is the color violet.

Opening the Chakras during meditation allows for the free flow of energy throughout these centers and hence restores the body’s physical, mental and emotional health.

To begin the meditation for opening the Chakras, ensure you are in a quiet environment where you will not be disturbed. Sit or lie down with your eyes closed and focus on your breathing. Take 3 long deep inhalations and exhalations to relax first and then try to breathe rhythmically without forcing the respirations.

The next step of the meditation is an exercise in visualization. You can start at the top, that which being the Crown Chakra and work your way down to the Root Chakra or in reverse, bottom to top. It really is a personal preference and both methods are effective.

For explaination purposes, lets start at the Root chakra. Focus your attention on the base of the spine. Visualise a spinning circle at this point glowing red in colour. Try to intensify the colour red in your minds eye, glowing brighter the more you focus on the Root Chakra. You may have a sensation of movement in this chakra. Don’t be alarmed, it means the energy centre is opening and energy is starting to flow unimpeded. Stay focused on the root chakra until you feel that the energy is moving in and out of that chakra freely. Visualise the movement of Red energy.

Now it is time to move up to the Sacral Chakra. Follow the same instructions as for the Root Chakra but your focus is now in the lower abdomen and the colour of the spinning circle is orange. Continue on upwards in the body to each individual Chakra and corresponding colour until you have reached the Crown Chakra. Spend as much time with each energy centre as you feel is needed to open them.

With practice your visualization skills and the ability to feel movement in these energy centres will improve. The Chakra meditation practiced daily will greatly improve your health by releasing blockages and negative energies from the body. It is believed that ill health is caused by impeded flow of energy through these vital power centres. Practicing Chakra Meditation will greatly improve and restore the natural flow of energy through these centres.
