Kundalini is the life force or energy of a person. In most people Kundalini is a sleeping serpent waiting to be set free. When Kundalini is experienced, the result is truly profound. It is an opening to great personal transformation, knowledge and abundance of energy, greater than that experienced as a child. It is a powerful awakening to our true potential, encompassing our physical, mental, emotional and spiritual wellbeing.
When we are born, our Kundalini is free flowing but as we age, Kundalini or life force becomes blocked. This is due to trauma and stress, bad habits and behaviors leant, childhood conditioning and cultural influences. These negative forces create mental and emotional stress which eventually leads to disease.
The Kundalini in most people lies dormant at the base of the spine, coiled like a snake. It waits to be awakened so it can uncoil and move up through the body to the top of the head. As it moves up through the body, it activates vital energy centres, also known as chakras. During the process of awakening Kundalini, profound experiences are possible. Different levels of awakening and mystical phenomena are often experienced as the Kundalini rises in the body. Fully awakening Kundalini, one can expect to experience pure joy, bliss, total relaxation and self knowledge.
When Kundalini awakens, there are physical symptoms that can assure us that we are progressing in our meditation practice. These symptoms are as follows.
1. Jerking, Twitching, Tingling, involuntary movements, itching sensations especially in the arms and legs. 2. Sudden energy rushes or electric buzzing sensations in the body. 3. Intense hot flushes or coldness felt in the body as the energy passes through the chakras. 4. Different visions or sounds associated with each chakra. 5. Highs like that which is experienced with orgasm. 6. Emotional upwelling. 7. A feeling of pressure inside the head. 8. Feelings of bliss, love, connectedness to all and great awareness.
To Awaken the Kundalini through Meditation, Here is a step by step guide.
1. Sit crossed legged on the floor. If you are unable to sit in this position, you can sit in a chair. Close your eyes. 2. Straighten your spine and relax your stomach muscles. 3. Focus with your mind on your breathing, breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth, inhale and exhale deeply, wait until your respirations have slowed down and are not forced, flowing freely. 4. Now you need to visualize a black cylinder at the base of the spine and coiled around it, is a red snake with its head facing upwards towards the ceiling with its mouth open. 5. Once you can clearly visualize the black cylinder and the red snake, visualize the snake struggling to climb up your spine and as it does, it is hissing. 6. As the snake rises up the spine, visualize its mouth open so wide, it encompasses your entire width of your body. The tail of the snake remains anchored to the black cylinder as the snake uncoils and rises. 7. You will probably find that the snake will collapse back down to the base of the spine the first few times you try to visualize this. Continue to visualize the red snake rising. 8. As you progress higher and higher within the spine, with the snake rising, you are likely to experience different sensations as mentioned above.
The effects of Kundalini Meditation may be felt straight away or may take a few sessions to master. You many feel a sudden outpouring of energy or sudden clarity of mind, an awakening at some stage. This could occur, during or after or even a few days after the meditation. These are signs that you are awakening the Kundalini. Like all disciplines Kundalini meditation needs to be practiced daily. It is best practiced on an empty stomach and morning times are the best.
