What Makes One a Sex Addict?

Sex addiction is best described as excessive, compulsive sexually related behaviors which interfere with normal activities such that it already causes stress on the family, career, friends, loved ones, and self. A sex addict already gives importance to sex rather than other aspects of life including family, work, and relationships.

Sex, then becomes an organized principle that it already rules the life of the person and dictates the way a person should live. Addicts have the tendency to disregard other, more important aspects of life in exchange of this unhealthy behavior. What's worse is that a sex addict may regularly increase the amount of sex experience to fulfill his sexual desire.

This makes sex addiction similar to substance abuse, but different from a case where a person just occasionally watches porn or engages in sexual activities once in a while (although this doesn't guarantee that the latter will not become a sex addict).

Signs of Sex Addiction

Sex addiction is characterized by out-of-control sexual behavior such as: Pornography addictionCompulsive masturbationProstitutionVoyeurism and exhibitionismCompulsive sexual episodesHaving chronic affairsUnsafe sexual practices

Although sex addiction may not go far beyond chronic masturbation, there are cases where an addict shows different sexual behaviors and may result to: Divorce or loss of a partnerMarital and relationship problemsUnwanted pregnancies or abortionsSuicide obsessions or attemptsAIDS or other venereal diseasesLoss of career

A sex addict may also commit sexual offenses and may result to legal problems. But it is important to note that not all sex offenders are sex addict and not all sex addicts are sex offenders. Still the chances to commit such acts are high.

A sex addict may also try to limit sexual behavior with his partner and seek this to other people such as prostitutes. Severe mood changes related to sexual activity may also be a sign.

Treatment

If you suspect you or someone you know is showing signs of sex addiction, a number of tests are necessary. This will determine whether you or the person needs treatment.

There are several treatments an addict can get to fully recover. The 12-step sexual recovery meetings are a great help. Finding professional counselors from organizations such as SASH and IITAP who deal with sex addiction is also a much needed help.

But just like recovering from other addictions, family support is the most important thing to make it all work.
